Amar A Desai, MD, MPH

A board certified physician in internal medicine and nephrology, Amar currently works at McKinsey and Company in Palo Alto, California.  While at McKinsey, he has worked on medical technology projects in addition to serving hospitals and health systems in their most pressing strategic and operational issues.

Amar has had a long standing interest in the use of technology to improve chronic disease management for underserved communities. He has published numerous papers in the areas of information technology, quality improvement, and health policy.  He is interested in quality-oriented health systems change, chronic disease management, and the experiences of vulnerable populations. His current research focuses on quality measurement for dialysis facilities and understanding the impact of financing policy on quality of care for patients with kidney disease.  He has worked on the implementation of a new clinical information system for the UCSF Medical Center and has conducted research examining the effectiveness of computer-based systems to improve clinician compliance with clinical practice guidelines.

Amar is currently an adjunct clinical instructor in the Division of Nephrology/Department of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine.  He is also an adjunct associate in Stanford University's Center for Health Policy (CHP) / Center for Primary Care Outcomes Research (PCOR).

Amar Desai received a BA in public policy from Brown University, an MD from Brown Medical School, and a Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard University School of Public Health. He completed his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at the University of California-San Francisco.
